A salt cell flow error can look expensive fast, but the flow switch is only one part of the story. In a UV and salt pool, the controller may report low flow because the switch is bad, because water is moving too slowly, or because air and debris are making circulation unstable before the water even reaches the cell.
Before replacing a salt cell, flow switch, or control board, work through the simple circulation checks first. Most false flow alarms come from pump speed, dirty baskets, filter pressure, closed valves, air leaks, or scale that blocks steady water movement through the cell.
What the flow switch actually does
The flow switch confirms that enough water is passing through the salt chlorine generator before the system allows chlorine production. That matters because the cell should not run dry or with weak flow. UV systems have the same basic need: the lamp can only treat water that moves through the chamber at a predictable rate.
When flow drops, chlorine production can stop even though the pump is on. The pool may then drift low on free chlorine, especially after heat, rain, heavy swimming, or a high bather load.
Start with pump and filter basics
- Empty the skimmer and pump baskets so the pump is not starved.
